History of Pickleball
Pickleball was born out of boredom in 1965, when three friends improvised a game with a wiffle ball and paddles on a badminton court. The friends were Joel Pritchard, a future congressman, Bill Bell, a businessman, and Barney McCallum, an engineer, who lived on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
In 1972, the trio formed a corporation to protect the rules and trademark of pickleball, and in 1976, the first pickleball tournament was held in Washington.
The name “pickleball” came from Joan Pritchard, Joel’s wife, who compared the game to a pickle boat, a term for a crew of mismatched rowers.
The game of pickleball spread by word-of-mouth and homemade equipment, as people enjoyed the easy and fun way to play tennis-like rallies on a smaller court.
What is Pickleball?
A weird combination of Badminton, Beach Ball, Tennis and Ping Pong played with a wiffle ball (hard plastic ball with holes in it) that is hit across the net on a court about a 1/4 of the size of a tennis court, roughly equal to a badminton court.
How is pickleball Played?
As with other racket sports, pickleball involves hitting the ball over the net with the intent of preventing your opponent from hitting it back.
It can be played in singles or doubles, inside or outside on a 20-foot by 44-foot court – approximately ¼ the size of a tennis court – generally the game is played to 11 points, winning with a two-point cushion. Unlike tennis, pickleball is scored in increments of 1 point at a time.
A serve must be hit into the opponent’s diagonal service court, except when playing skinny singles which uses only half of the court. Hitting the ball out of bounds is a foul.
